Schweitzer has been part of Sandpoint’s history for decades, but did you know these four facts about the popular ski resort…

  1. Schweitzer Mountain was named after a hermit that lived at the bottom of the basin. No one really knows too much about who he was other than that he was believed to be Swiss, but it didn’t keep the locals from calling the mountain Schweitzer, which means Swiss Man in German.
  2. The ski resort was a result of a ski vacation to Whitefish, Montana. The original founder Jack Fowler saw the beauty of Schweitzer Mountain and decided that it needed to be a premier ski resort.
  3. The first ski lift was funded by local Sandpoint residents. Shares of the resort were sold to local residents to fund the beginning of our local ski mountain. This helped the mountain open December 4th, 1963.
  4. Schweitzer Mountain Ski Resort is the home to 2900 acres of snow covered terrain. As well as almost 20 miles of cross country ski trails.
